Egypt leads establishing of Nile single transport corridor, which aims to connect 10 African countries and improve the trade in the region. The project is initiated by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypot and will connect Lake Victoria and the Mediterranean through Nile river. The project is estimated to cost 12 billion USD and part of the funds for construction of the transport waterway will come from the African Development Bank. According to the plan until 2024 will be established waterway corridor, which will link Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt. the project
Already was completed feasibility study and was signed a contract with the German-Belgian consulting company on the technical side of the elaboration of the project
According to the plans, in only a few years the Nile single transport corridor will become a developed transport hub with intermodal (associated with the use of different transport modes in one trip) modes of transport, including water and railway. So, it is planned to open a navigation line for small and medium-sized vessels to establish trade and passenger traffic. The modern port jetty will be built in Egyptian territories in Alexandria and the Suez Canal, as well as in Mombasa(Kenya) and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). In addition, along the Nile will be held Trans-African Highway (Cape-Cairo, Lagos-Mombasa, Dakar-N’Djamena-Djibouti and Cairo-Dakar), not counting the small number of regional railway lines.
The first phase of the project envisages the development of the transport hub of Lake Albert in Uganda to the Sudanese capital Khartoum, from the Gambella region of Ethiopia to the White Nile in Southern Sudan and Khartoum – to Aswan. The second phase will cover the Lake Albert and Victoria and the area between the Blue Nile basin in Ethiopia to Sudan. According to the plans, although the final implementation of the plan is scheduled for 2024, some of its components, promise Egyptian representatives, it can be started already in 2017.
