Containers caught fire on upper deck of post-panamax boxship YM Utopia at Yangshan deepwater anchorage off Shanghai, China. The vessel was anchored in port area, when one container on main deck started smoking. The flames engulfed the nearby units and fire spread on the fore deck. The accident was reported to the local authorities and at the scene were dispatched one harbor tugs, which started pouring the burning containers with water. The crew also participated in firefighting. According to the report the vessel was carrying hazardous cargo, but it was not affected by the fire. The flames were extinguished, but the boxship YM Utopia was detained at outer anchorage for further inspection and special safety survey.
The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of the fire. The vessel will be inspected before allowed to enter the port. During the fire there were no injured people and no reported water pollution.
The post-panamax container carrier YM Utopia (IMO: 9337456) has overall length of 333.00 m, moulded beam of 42.00 m and maximum draft of 12.50 m. The deadweight of the ship is 103,614 DWT and the gross tonnage is 90,507 GRT. The ship was built in 2008 by CSBC in the shipyard in Kaohsiung in Taiwan. The post-panamax container carrier YM Utopia is operated by Taiwanese shipping operator Yang Ming. The box ship was deployed on company’s AWE3 Service (USA-Central America-Asia).
