Container carrier Ocean Kingdom was attacked by pirates in Philippines

Ocean KingdomThe container carrier Ocean Kingdom was attacked by pirates shortly after leaving Zamboanga port in Philippines. The vessel was underway on 25 nautical miles from Sibago Island, when was approached by two speedboats with heavy armed men on board. The crew raised alarm and reported the accident to the local authorities and Coast Guard. At the scene were dispatched two patrol boats, which arrived just on time to prevent boarding to the container carrier. There was fire between the pirates and Coast Guard officers, but attackers fled away in unknown direction. The vessel was ordered to return in Zamboanga port for further investigation.

It was reported that all the crew from the container carrier Ocean Kingdom is safe and unharmed. There is no information if during the firefight there were injured pirates or Coast Guard officers. The investigation for the belonging of the pirates and tracing them is under way. The container carrier will be released to resume voyage after inspection.

The container carrier Ocean Kingdom (IMO: 9202091) has overall length of 127.00 m, moulded beam of 27.00 m and maximum draft of 6.800 m. The deadweight of the ship is 8,450 DWT and the gross tonnage is 7,541 GRT. The vessel was built in 2000 by Cassens Werft in Emden, Germany. The owner and operator of the container carrier Ocean Kingdom is German company Buss Reederei.
