American Destroyer “Donald Cook” Arrives at Turkish Base for the Eastern Mediterranean 2017 Training

The American destroyer Donald Cook arrived at the Turkish naval base Akzas-Karagach to take part in the naval exercises “Eastern Mediterranean – 2017”, the command of the US Navy in Europe reported on Wednesday.

The arrival of the destroyer coincided with the two-day meeting of defense ministers of NATO member countries that opens in Brussels on Wednesday.

On the eve of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters that at this meeting the ministers will decide to establish a new command structure to protect maritime communications between North America and Europe, and to improve the transfer of troops and assets within Europe.

According to the Secretary General, “the world is becoming increasingly unpredictable and the alliance must constantly adapt so that its command structure is fully capable of providing deterrence and defense for us and projecting stability beyond our territory.”Donald Cook

“One of the main reasons why NATO adapts in the field of strengthening our forces’ readiness, the further deployment of our forces on the eastern flank of the alliance and the change in the NATO command structure, is the illegal annexation of the Crimea and the ongoing destabilizing actions in the east of Ukraine,” Stoltenberg stressed.
