The passenger vessel Kanzam Express sank in Luzon Strait on 50 nautical miles west off Itbayat Island in Batanes Archipelago, Philippines. The vessel started getting water ingress by the stern and partially submerged. The crew reported the accident to the local authorities and sent distress signal, requesting immediate evacuation. The ferry had no passengers on board and only seven crew members. The search and rescue operation was coordinated by MRCC Taiwan and to the distress signal responded the bulk carrier Ingrid C, which headed to the sinking passenger ship. Five from the seamen on board of the sinking ship were rescued, but another two people from the crew are still missing.
The Philippines Coast Guard continue SAR, engaging helicopter and rescue boats. The bad weather additionally worsen the situation and reduce the change to find missing people.
The bulk carrier Ingrid C arrived to Kaohsiung with five rescued seamen, who were hospitalized for medical treatment and examination. The root cause of the accident is under investigation.

The deadweight of the catamaran ferry is 42 DWT and the gross tonnage is 272 GRT. The ship was built in 1994 by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering in South Korea.
