Seaman from self-propelled barge missing after collision with bulker in Vietnam

Bulk carrier Seiyo HarmonyThe bulk carrier Seiyo Harmony collided with self-propelled barge, while approaching the Thi Vai port in Vietnam. Following the collision, the barge started getting water ingress, lost stability and sank, trapping the skipped inside the wheelhouse. The accident was reported to the local authorities and the vessel anchored near the collision site. The authorities dispatched rescue boats and engaged nearby fishermen in large-scale search and rescue operation for the missing seaman. Also divers were sent to the submerged barge to inspect for the missing skipped, but did not found him.

The investigation for the root cause of the collision is under way. There is no report about water pollution, but the scene of the accident is under monitoring for oil or other products leak.

The bulk carrier Seiyo Harmony (IMO: 9266152) has overall length of 177.00 m, moulded beam of 28.40 m and maximum draft of 6.50 m. The deadweight of the bulker is 32,379 DWT and the gross tonnage is 20,212 GRT. The bulk carrier was built in 2003 by Kanda Shipbuilding in their shipyard in Kure, Japan.
