The product tanker Volgoneft 247 suffered cracks in the hull and started getting water ingress while proceeding from Volgograd to Kavkaz Port. The vessel was loaded with 4500 tons of heavy fuel, but cargo tanks remained unharmed and did not caused oil leaks. After the crew estimated draft increase, headed to safe mooring berth on Volga River, where requested assistance from the local authorities. The underwater inspection estimated that the hull cracked on several places below the waterline, which was followed by water ingress and flooding of some ballast tanks and dry compartments. The fuel and cargo tanks remain strong and did not suffered damages, being the last barrier before oil spill and water pollution.
The product tanker Volgoneft 247 remain anchored until further decision if the hull breaches can be patched and fixed, or will need of dry dock. The vessel was stabilized and remain afloat without danger of sinking and oil spills. The divers will try to weld the cracks, but in case of failuer, the tanker need to be offloaded and dry docked for repair works.
The product tanker Volgoneft 247 (IMO: 8727991) has overall length of 132.60 m, moulded beam of 16.90 m and maximum draft of 4.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 4,550 DWT and the gross tonnage is 3,475 GRT. The ship was built in 1975 by Volgograd Shipbuilding in Russia.
