Product tanker Genius Venus spilled oil in Netherlands

Genius Venus tankerThe product tanker Genius Venus spilled oil in New Maas river in old port of Vlaardingen in Netherlands during bunkering operations from tanker Texas. About 600 liters of oil leaked overboard and spilled into the water, causing large oil spot and water pollution. The local authorities and crew immediately started cleaning operations and surrounded the spot by oil booms. The oil was collected during the next hours without affecting environment. The local authorities fined the owner of the product tanker Genius Venus was fined with 4000 EUR for the accident and will need to pay all the fees for water cleaning.

The investigation for the root cause of the accident showed that crew on board of product tanker Genius Venus calculated wrongly the free space in fuel tank and it overflew. During the accident there were no injured people.

The product tanker Genius Venus (IMO: 9613965) has overall length of 171.00 m, moulded beam of 27.00 m and maximum draft of 9.20 m. The deadweight of the ship is 33,552 DWT and the gross tonnage is 19,899 GRT. The ship was built in 2013 by Kitanihon Shipbuilding in their shipyard in Hachinohe, Japan. The owner and operator of the product tanker Genius Venus is K Line Singapore.
