NYK’s car carrier Emerald Leader caught fire in Bremerhaven

Emerald LeaderThe NYK’s car carrier Emerald Leader caught fire at Kaiser Port in Bremerhaven, Germany. Transformer in one of the compartments inflamed and filled with smoke the lower decks. The accident was immediately reported to the local authorities and at the scene arrived shore firefighting teams. The fire was small and was quickly extinguished, but firefighters needed more time in ventilating the ship’s decks. The local authorities ordered safety inspection and special survey before restart cargo handling operations. It was understood that car carrier Emerald Leader did not suffered any damages and was released to return in service. The vessel left Bremerhaven en route to Zeebrugge, Belgium.

The investigation for the root cause of the fire is under way. There were no injured people and no water pollution during accident. According to preliminary information, the reason for fire was technical malfunction into the transformed, which inflamed after overheating.

The car carrier Emerald Leader (IMO: 9361811) has overall length of 176.00 m, moulded beam of 31.10 m and maximum draft of 8.50 m. The deadweight of the ship is 10,819 DWT and the gross tonnage is 40,986 GRT. The car carrier was built in 2007 by Uljanik Shipyard in Pula, Croatia.
