The LPG tanker Ghitta Gas suffered rudder failure in Aegean sea off Kalimnos island, Greece. The ship was under cargo and requested assistance from the local authorities due to danger from more serious accident. At the scene of the disabled LPG tanker was dispatched one tug, which performed salvage and towed Ghitta Gas to Kalimnos port anchorage. The vessel was anchored there for repair works, which will delay due to waiting for dispatch of the spare parts from the rudder pump. The LPG tanker Ghitta Gas will be fully inspected after the repair is complete and will return in operations and continue the voyage.
The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of the accident. Fortunately during the rudder failure there were no injured people and no water pollution, despite that the ship was under recognizable hazard D cargo.
The LPG tanker Ghitta Gas (IMO: 8817693) has overall length of 98.30 m, moulded beam of 16.20 m and maximum draft of 4.70 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 4828 DWT and gross tonnage is 4086 GRT. The LPG tanker Ghitta Gas was built in 1990 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korean. and managed by Danish company Lauritzen Kosan.
