High-speed ferry Universal MK-2003 collided with fishing boat off Hong Kong

High-speed ferry Universal MK-2003The high-speed ferry Universal MK-2003 collided with fishing boat near Lantau, Hong Kong. The vessel was returning from Macao with 289 passengers and 10 crew members on board, but her route was crossed by not well marked fishing ship. The skipper of the ferry maneuvered to avoid collision in very last moment, but unfortunately hit the fishing ship with her port board and suffered large breach above the water line. One woman was slightly injured during the collision and was evacuated from the ferry to the local hospital. All other passengers were in good health and successfully arrived to Macau Ferry Pier in Sheung Wan.

The incident was reported to local authorities and at the scene of collision was dispatched coast guard boat. An inspection of seaworthiness was held and high-speed ferry Universal MK-2003 was detained for more than 2 hours. After that the ship was released to resume voyage and safely arrived at Macau Ferry Pier.

The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of the collision. According to preliminary information, the collision happened due to bad weather and poor visibility. Fortunately there is no water pollution during the accident.

The high-speed ferry Universal MK-2003 (IMO: 7523881) has overall length of 29.00 m, moulded beam of 9.00 m and maximum draft of 2.00 m. The vessel has gross tonnage of 267 GRT. The high-speed ferry was built in 1975 by Boeing Marine Systems in USA. The ship is operating on regular route between Macao and Hong Kong.
