The general cargo ship Lily B spilled oil at southern chamber of the Kiel Canal locks. The vessel was en route from Hamburg to Aalborg, when oil film was observed behind the ship. The local authorities and water police were informed about thee pollution and lock was closed. The water inside was cleaned by special equipment, but all the three ships inside, including cargo vessel Lily B were blocked inside. After the water was finally cleaned the other two ships were released to resume voyage, while ship Lily B was ordered to berthed at the East Shore Port in Kiel for further investigation and inspection.
During the accident there were no injured people. It is not yet clear what was exact quantity of spilled oil inside the lock, but according preliminary investigation the crew offloaded some sludge by mistake. The vessel will be fined and will be released to resume voyage with small delay.
The general cargo ship Lily B (IMO: 9066069) has overall length of 81.00 m, moulded beam of 12.00 m and maximum draft of 3.30 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 2,300 DWT and the gross tonnage is 1,596 GRT. The general cargo ship was built in 1994 by Schiffswerft Bodenwerder in Germany.
