General cargo ship BBC Colorado disabled during storm in North Pacific

BBC ColoradoThe general cargo ship BBC Colorado suffered engine failure during storm in North Pacific on 900 nautical miles south off Aleutian Islands. The vessel was en route from Shanghai to Portland, but in the middle of the route lost propulsion power and remained with restricted maneuverability, closed by bad weather with 9-meter waves and 50 kts winds. The Master of the general cargo ship BBC Colorado reported the accident to the Rescue Coordination Center and sent distress signal to the US Coast Guard. At the scene of the troubled vessel was dispatched tug Resolve Pioneer, which took the freighter on tow. The convoy headed to USA coast with slow speed of 6 kts.

At the scene of distressed cargo ships and towing tug arrived also the US Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau, which launched its embarked helicopter to evaluate the condition of BBC Colorado. It was estimated that there is no immediate danger for the vessel, but decided to remain on scene in case of emergency. Later the US Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau returned to the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea, where continued mission of fisheries enforcement.

There were no injured people during the incident. The freighter with 12 crew members proceed through North Pacific towed by the tug Resolve Pioneer to USA with slow speed. The weather is fresh and the storm remained behind the convoy.

The general cargo ship BBC Colorado (IMO: 9435117) has overall length of 138.00 m, moulded beam of 21.00 m and maximum draft of 6.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 12,742 DWT and the gross tonnage is 9,618 GRT. The cargo ship was built in 2008 by Jiangdong Shipyard in Wuhu, China.
