The fishing vessel Esterio caught fire off Bahia Blanca, Argentina. The vessel was trawling in South Atlantic, when the ice generator started smoked and was engulfed by flames. The crew was unable to extinguish the flames and reported the accident, requesting for assistance. All the 17 crew were successfully evacuated by nearby fishing vessel and transported to the shore with injuries. The Argentina Coast Guard dispatched helicopter to inspect the situation of the burning ship and dispatched towing tug to the scene of the accident. The fishing vessel Esterio is still burning and drifting with increasing list to port board. There is danger from capsizing and sinking.
The salvage operation was started, but authorities are afraid that vessel might sink before the rescue tug arrive at the scene. The ship has increasing list to the port board and fire engulfed the whole main deck. The investigation for the root cause of the accident is under way.
The fishing vessel Esterio (IMO: 8711203) has overall length of 40.00 m, moulded beam of 8.00 m and maximum draft of 3.50 m. The deadweight of the ship is 304 DWT and the gross tonnage is 393 GRT. The vessel was built in 1988 by Astilleros Balenciaga in Spain. The fishing vessel Esterio is operating under the flag of Argentina and managed by local company Baldimar.
