Container ship X-Press Etna aground in Port of Rotterdam

X-Press EtnaThe container ship X-Press Etna ran aground in Port of Rotterdam shortly after leaving the dock. The vessel bound for St. Peterburg suffered blackout and engine failure during maneuvering to leave the port. The disabled container ship left the shipping way and hardly stuck into the sandbank, but fortunately without suffering breaches and underwater damages. The accident was reported to the local authorities, but the salvage operation was postponed for later during the day at high tide. The container ship X-Press Etna was refloated and berthed at the pier in Port of Rotterdam for safety inspection and underwater survey.

The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of the accident. Fortunately during the grounding there were no injured people and no water pollution. The ship will be released to resume the voyage after passing port state control and safety inspection.

The Cyprus-flagged container ship X-Press Etna (IMO: 9354349) has overall length of 134.00 m, moulded beam of 22.00 m and maximum draft of 8.60 m. The deadweight of the ship is 11,257 DWT and the gross tonnage is 9,981 GRT. The container ship was built in 2006 by JJ Sietas Schiffswerft om Hamburg, Germany.
