Inland freighter Freienstein lost containers in Port of Rotterdam

Freienstein containersThe container carrier Freienstein lost containers in Port of Rotterdam, being hit by the storm Angus. The vessel arrived from Port of Mainz and successfully docked despite of the strong winds, but cargo handling operations were delayed due to the bad weather. The winds caused breaking of the containers securing lines and many of them damaged, while some fell overboard into the port basin. The local authorities were informed about the accident and immediately sent notice to seafarers for drifting objects at the port. The strong winds hampers removing of the drifting containers, which is planned to be done after weather improves.

Fortunately during the accident there were no injured people. The vessel was not carrying hazardous materials and there is no report for water pollution. The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of the accident and ordered safety inspection of the carrier.

Storm Angus battered western Europe with heavy rainfall, strong winds and high waves.

The river container ship Freienstein has overall length of 135.00 m, moulded beam of 15.00 m and maximum draft of 3.00 m. The vessel is operating under the flag of Switzerland and operate on inland routes.
