Coastal fishing trawler sank in collision with Vietnamese freighter Tay Son 4 in Java Sea

Tay Son 4The Vietnamese general cargo ship Tay Son 4 collided with fishing trawler KM Mulya Sejati in Java Sea on 22 nautical miles north off Tuban, Indonesia. Following the accident the fishing vessel capsized and sank, throwing into the water 27 fishermen. The crew of the general cargo ship Tay Son 4 succeeded to rescue 12 people from the water of Java Sea, but unfortunately another 13 are still missing. The accident was reported to local authorities and was organized large-scale SAR, engaging nearby fishing ships, cargo ships, coast guard boats and helicopter. The search continue during the whole day, but none of the missing people was found. The general cargo ship Tay Son 4 was detained during the investigation and estimating the responsibilities.

The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of the accident. According to witness evidences and preliminary information, the fishing ship was not marked and poor lights, operating without radar and AIS. The coastal fishing trawler KM Mulya Sejati was overloaded, probably having passengers on board or might have illegal migrants.

The general cargo ship Tay Son 4 (IMO: 9370587) has overall length of 136.40 m, moulded beam of 20.20 m and maximum draft of 7.40 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 13,303 DWT and the gross tonnage is 8,216 GRT. The general cargo ship has built in 2005 by Ha Long Shipbuilding Industry in Haiphong, Vietnam. During the collision, the freighter was en route from Thailand to Surabaya, Indonesia.
