Chinese sand carrier capsized in Yangtze river after collision with bulk carrier Xin Zhou 18

Capsize sand carrierThe Chinese sand carrier Longhao 1 capsized after collision with bulk carrier Xin Zhou 18 in Yangtze river. The accident happened near Zhenjiang, due to serious violation of the ColReg and lack of communication between the both duty officers. The bulk carrier Xin Zhou 18 was making a voyage under ballast from Zhenjiang to Caofeidan, when her route was crossed by the sand carrier Longhao 1, carrying 2,700 tons of yellow sand from Jiangxi to Shanghai. The both vessel maneuvered in the last minute but too late and they remained on collision course. The bulk carrier Xin Zhou 18 hit the starboard of the sank carrier, which caused capsizing of the vessel. All the three crew were went into the water, but were rescued by nearby fishermen and local authorities.

Fortunately there were no reported injuries and no water pollution. The authorities are considering refloating of the capsized sand carrier. The investigation for the root cause of the accident is under way.

The sand carrier Longhao 1 has overall length of 69.00 m, moulded beam of 12.00 m and maximum draft of 4.50 m.

The bulk carrier Xin Zhou 18 has overall length of 190.00 m, moulded beam of 33.00 m and maximum draft of 8.60 m.
