Cargo ship Nordana Madeleine aground in St Lawrence river after blackout

Nordana MadeleineThe general cargo ship Nordana Madeleine ran aground in St Lawrence river after blackout. The vessel was making a voyage under ballast to Hamilton in Lake Ontario, when the engine and steering gear stopped after blackout. The ship ran aground into a sandy/mud shallow in Lake Saint-Pierre near south off Yamachiche, Canada. The vessel hardly stuck and was not able to refloat by own power, after restarting the main engine. At the scene of the accident were dispatched two tugs, which assisted with towing to safe depth, where the vessel was anchored for further inspection.

The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of the accident. The ship did not suffered any damages during grounding, but coast guard ordered Nordana Madeleine to proceed to Montreal for inspection and special survey. Fortunately during grounding there were no injured people and no water pollution.

The general cargo ship Nordana Madeleine (IMO: 9456721) has overall length of 143.00 m, moulded beam of 19.00 m and maximum draft of 6.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 12,080 DWT and the gross tonnage is 8,999 GRT. The ship was built in 2009 by Damen Yichang Shipyard in China.
