Car carrier Grande Italia suffered engine failure in Dardanelles

Grande ItaliaThe car carrier Grande Italia suffered engine failure during passage of Dardanelles Strait. The vessel was proceeding in northern direction, but near Canakkale got blackout and lost propulsion power. The crew was unable to restart the engine and requested assistance from the local authorities. At the scene of the accident were dispatched two tugs, which towed the car carrier Grande Italia to anchorage in Yapildak area, where the ship will be repaired and inspected. There is no information what is the cause of the problem and when the vessel’s engineers will fix the problem, but ship will be some delay from the schedule. During the propulsion failure, the vessel was en route from Ashdod, Israel to Izmit, Turkey.

The local authorities requested full inspection of the vessel after repair of the problem. Fortunately during the accident there were no injured people no water pollution. The traffic in the strait was no affected by the blackout of the car carrier.

The car carrier Grande Italia (IMO: 9227912) has overall length of 177.00 m, moulded beam of 30.00 m and maximum draft of 7.40 m. The deadweight of the ship is 12,594 DWT and the gross tonnage is 37,726 GRT. The car carrier was built in 2001 in Uljanik Shipyard in Pula, Croatia. The vessel is owned and operated by Italian carrier Grimaldi Group.
