Bulk carrier Fortune Harmony caught fire off Uruguay

bulk carrier Fortune HarmonyThe bulk carrier Fortune Harmony caught fire at Piriapolis anchorage off Rio de La Plata, Uruguay. The vessel was en route from Halida, India to Recalada, Argentina, but in South Atlantic the bridge and accommodation areas inflamed after short circuit of personal appliances. The fire extended to the whole superstructure and put the vessel in danger. The circumstances around the accident are not clear, but ship ran aground off Rio de La Plata and hardly stuck. The fire was extinguished by the crew, but reason for grounding is unknown. According to local authorities, the bulk carrier Fortune Harmony suffered blackout and grounded into a rocky shallow. The distress signal to the local authorities was sent and at the scene will be dispatched towing tugs to refloat the ship.

The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of the accident. There were no injured people and no water pollution. The ship will be repaired and inspected before return in operation and resume the voyage to Recalada, Argentina.

The bulk carrier Fortune Harmony (IMO: 9592094) has overall length of 229.00 m, moulded beam of 32.30 m and maximum draft of 14.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 81,200 DWt and the gross tonnage is 44,543 GRT. The bulk carrier was built in 2013 by Dalian Shipbuilding in China. The owner and operator of bulk carrier Fortune Harmony is China’s Cosco Shipmanagement.
