ABM DiscoveryThe bulk carrier ABM Discovery was fined for water pollution in Gulf of Antalya. The vessel was accused for discharging oily water in off the Turkish coast and found guilty after inspection. The vessel was detained in Port of Isdemir during the investigation and until the case is completed. The Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Department of Environmental Health imposed fine of almost 34,000 USD (106,634 TRY) to the shipowner in relation with the environmental pollution. The bulk carrier ABM Discovery is still docked at Port of Isdemir, probably detained until the imposed fine is paid.

The local authorities stressed that will continue their activities against pollution and will strictly monitor of the merchant ships operating in the Gulf of Antalya and Turkish coast. The region has busy traffic, which is increasing during the last years, but on other side is the most important tourism spot in Turkey. They local authorities are trying to reduce the negative effect of the shipping to the local environment, due to the high importance of the region for the country economy.

The bulk carrier ABM Discovery (IMO: 9006643) has overall length of 180.00 m, moulded beam of 30.00 m and maximum draft of 8.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 39,110 DWT and the gross tonnage is 21,941 GRT. The Panama-flagged ship was built in 1992 at JMU Shipyard in Japan.
