This Sunday marks the largest NATO naval exercise in the Baltic Sea , where some 8,600 US and European soldiers, belonging to 18 nations, will participate in the exercises that will run until June 21.
The participating troops come from the member countries of NATO, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Turkey, Spain, the United Kingdom and the USA. Also Sweden and Finland, which are part of the EU, but not of NATO, will participate in the exercise.
The 47th BALTOPS exercise involves maritime, air and land forces with some 50 submarines and 40 aircraft and will be carried out until June 21.
The training includes finding and destroying marine and submarine mines, air defense and ground landing troops.
Russia used to participate in the exercise, but has not been invited since its illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014.
