On May 1, the United States Navy announced the date of commissioning of the future USS Billings coastal combat ship (LCS 15).

Several months after selecting Key West, Florida as the host city for the commissioning of the future USS Billings (LCS 15), the office of Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer announced that the event will take place on August 3, 2019.

The commissioning ceremony signifies acceptance for the service and entry of a ship into the active fleet of the United States Navy. Mrs. Sharla Tester, the wife of Montana Senator John Tester, is the sponsor of the ship.

The ceremony will be highlighted by a tradition of the Navy for a long time when Mrs. Tester gives the first order to “man our boat and give it life!”. By the time the commission flag is raised, the USS Billings (LCS 15) becomes a proud fleet ship. Commander Michael Johnson, along with the ship’s officers and crew, will accept the duties and responsibilities of preparing and keeping it ready for any service required by our nation.

The future USS Billings is the 17th coastal combat vessel (LCS) to be delivered to the Navy and the eighth of the Freedom variant to join the fleet. The Navy accepted the delivery of the future USS Billings (LCS 15) during a ceremony at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM), shipyard, Marinette, Wisconsin, February 1, 2018. The delivery marks the official transfer of the ship from the ship’s builder , part of a team led by Lockheed Martin, to the Navy. It is the final milestone before the commissioning.

LCS is a highly maneuverable, lethal and adaptable ship, designed to support focused mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare and surface war missions. The variant LCS from Freedom integrates new technology and capacity to support in an affordable way the capacity of current and future mission, from deep to coastal waters.
