The Officer and Three Sailors of the Baltic Fleet Convicted of Stealing from the Military Equipment Boards Containing Precious Metals

In the Kaliningrad region, an officer and three of his subordinates were convicted of stealing military property, the press service of the Military Investigation Department for the Baltic Fleet said.

The investigation and the court found that in August 2016, the commander of the platoon of military unit 54129, Senior Lieutenant Alexei Bashkatov, offered his subordinates to dismantle the equipment in it during the maintenance of military equipment, removing from it the boards containing precious metals.

As a result, from August 2016 to April 2017, they stole assets worth more than 2.2 million rubles.

“By the decision of the Kaliningrad Garrison Military Court, Senior Lieutenant A. Bashkatov was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 3 years and 2 months,” the statement reads.

In addition, the sentence was handed down to three sailors: Konstantin Valutis received 1 year suspended sentence for a year, Efim Egorov and Yevgeny Zelensky 1.5 and 2.5 years, respectively, in a penal colony.

The criminal case was initiated under paragraph 2 of Art. 158 (theft committed by a group of persons in a preliminary conspiracy).
