Russian warships arrived in Qingdao, a port city in east China’s Shandong province, on Monday to carry out joint naval exercises scheduled with China, as military experts said the navies would conduct joint defense operations and show a high level of mutual trust.

According to a statement from the Army of the People’s Liberation Army (EPL) sent to the Global Times on Monday.

The Russian fleet also includes a submarine, two anti-submarine ships, a corvette, a landing craft, an oil tanker and a rescue ship.

The PLA Navy will send a submarine, two guided missile destroyers, three guided missile frigates and one underwater rescue ship in the exercises, according to the statement.

According to the information published Thursday by the Ministry of National Defense of China, seven fixed-wing aircraft, four helicopters and 80 navy members from both sides are also part of the exercises.

The drills are scheduled to start on Monday and last until Saturday.

The joint maritime defense operations will be the subject of the drills, said the statement of the Chinese navy.

The exercises include joint maneuvers, organization of communications, missiles and artillery on marine and aerial targets and support in the search and rescue, reported the Russian news agency Sputnik.

Zhang Junshe, principal investigator of the Naval Military Research Institute of the PLA, told the Global Times that, since the theme of the exercise is joint maritime defense operations, subjects may also include anti-aircraft, anti-submarine and submarine rescue.

During these issues, the parameters of the weapons and equipment of both navies, including radar and sonar, will open up to each other, which is an indication of high-level strategic mutual trust between the two military, Zhang said.

The aim of the simulations is to consolidate and improve the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Russia, deepen practical cooperation between the two armies and boost the capacity of the two navies to jointly face threats to maritime security, the statement said.
