There have been few mysteries around the Great Blue Hole of Belize, the largest sink on the planet, which has just been explored by a group of scientists in search of answers to some enigmatic traces found at the bottom of this unique circle of colour. intense blue, under immensely turquoise waters.

About 100 kilometers from the coast of Belize, with about 300 meters wide and 123 meters deep, this submerged hole has always been considered one of the most attractive places for divers and experts who study the oceans.

The popular imaginary has related it to the habitat of sea monsters and even to a portal to another dimension, although now we really know what is hidden there, after the expedition carried out earlier this year by the billionaire Richard Branson and Fabien Cousteau, grandson of the famous diver Jacques Cousteau, who was one of the first to give global attention to such an incredible place.

The hole is located in the middle of the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world. “It was like seeing a photograph of the past,” Bryan Price, one of the Aquatica company’s explorers, told the media that he built the two submarines used in the mission to discover the mysteries hidden in that place.

A sink is a hondyra in the earth, formed when the ground collapses leaving a large hole in the surface. Tens of thousands of years ago, that hole was solid ground, but with the rise in sea level, after the end of the glaciations, it was submerged. Price said they could see “what the place was like when it was not covered in water”.

After the exploration of the sump, which for the first time could be seen in its full dimension thanks to the technology used, scientists are beginning to reveal what is down there and especially what those mysterious “fingerprints” are that they could capture with a sonar high resolution.

Down there one of the points that most surprised them was an area that they baptized as “The Cathedral”, which is full of stalactites, which although they had been detected, had not been observed in detail.

The researchers observed that the hole is divided into three “layers”, each with different characteristics. The most superficial looks like the typical Caribbean waters, but then as the depth increases, the water stops being crystal clear. “It’s like going through clouds or smoke,” said Price.

In the deepest layer there is no light or oxygen, so they could observe species that had fallen there and had been preserved , in addition to the mysterious traces “In the hole itself there is not much life, because there is not much exchange of water, “Price said. However, they were able to observe some sharks . The mission also served to create a 3D map of the hole.

However, the speculations of the collective imagination did not wait for the sounds detected by the sonar. Traces of aliens? The footsteps of an unknown giant animal? A monster that scientists could not see?

Fortunately, the answer is simpler. The reports of the expedition reveal that these marks have to do with the eternal struggle between life and death.
