A man lost his life after trying to rescue his dog from the turbulent waters of Ocean Beach, authorities said Thursday.
Gregg Owens and his wife, originally from Nevada, were walking along the beach with their dogs when a wave took them away. Owens hurried to rescue them but when he had succeeded, another wave pulled him to the sea and lashed him to the rocks.
The San Diego Fire Department received a call at 1:49 pm about a necessary water rescue near Abbott Street and West Point Loma Boulevard.
SDFD was able to retrieve the man trapped on the pier 20 minutes later and gave him first aid for about 10 minutes, the agency said. Officers at the scene said that the man’s dog was fine.
The man was transferred to UCSD Hillcrest. He was “fighting” for a while, said a spokesman with the San Diego Police Department.
When he was admitted to the intensive care room he stopped breathing and was pronounced dead moments later.
San Diego is under a high swell warning.
