The government has developed rules for the passage of foreign ships along the Northern Sea Route (NSR), they write to Izvestia with reference to the relevant document.
It is noted that such a need arose because of the “intensification in the Arctic zone of naval activities of various states.” The purpose of the innovation is to maintain control over the environment and merchant shipping.
According to the new rules, ships and vessels of other countries will have to notify the Russian side 45 days before going through the NSR.
It is required to report the name of the ship, the route and the timing of navigation, as well as the main parameters of the craft, such as displacement, draft and engine characteristics.
You will also need to specify the military rank and surname of the captain.
In addition, the document will oblige foreign ships and vessels to take on board Russian pilots.
In case of an emergency or complication of the ice situation, Russian icebreakers will have to provide assistance.
