The First Icebreaker “Leader” is Likely to Build a Shipyard “Zvezda”

As reported by ITAR-TASS news agency, the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov told reporters on the sidelines of the forum-exhibition “Gidroaviasalon-2018” that the first icebreaker “Leader” with the capacity of 120 MW is most likely to build the Far Eastern shipyard Zvezda.

We have a task to build more than one 120-megawatt icebreaker, and we should keep in mind a series of at least three or even four vessels,” he said.

According to the Minister, under such conditions, the construction of icebreakers will be economically profitable from the point of view of allocating costs for design and construction, and, subsequently, for operation.

D. Manturov recalled that nuclear icebreakers can build two St. Petersburg shipyards: “Baltiysky Zavod” and “Severnaya Verf”. With the commissioning of a new shipyard in the Far East, Russia will have another site for the construction of large tonnage vessels. Minpromtorg is at the final stage of forming a package of orders for the “Star”.

“The icebreaker is built long enough. This is a ship that will close the space of a dry dock for a certain period. And in order not to slow down other orders of large-tonnage, we calculate the schedule for loading shipyards, “the minister added.
