Not only the North German ports record a record year after year in terms of cruise ships and passengers. Southampton also experienced a new record year in 2017. Approximately 2 million cruise passengers were welcomed there last year. There had been about 500 ship starts in 2017. For the current year 2018, even higher figures are expected.
For comparison: in Hamburg in 2017 about 810,000 passengers were handled, in Kiel about 500,000. The city on the fjord expects this year with 600,000 passengers.
Southampton is looking forward too many first-time acquisitions this year, similar to the German ports. The following ships are expected in Southampton for the first time: AIDAperla, NORWEGIAN BLISS, SAPPHIRE PRINCESS, ZUIDERDAM, KONINGSDAM, SEVEN SEAS NAVIGATOR. In addition, a “small” boat baptism is on the program in the South English port. The AZAMARA PURSUIT, the newest fleet access at Azamara Club Cruises, is christened, although it is not a newbuilding. By the way, this will be the first baptism in the house of Azamara. The two sister ships had not been baptized again at the time.
Ship spotters in Southern England should enter the calendar on August 31st. Six cruise liners are expected in Southampton on the same day: ARCADIA, AURORA, BRAEMAR, INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS, MINE SHIP 3 and QUEEN VICTORIA.
Incidentally, Southampton as a port of departure for German cruise tourists is always interesting. Occasionally short cruises are offered, which also end in German ports.
