Maersk Line cooperates in combating the flames of the ship damaged in the Arabian Sea
Maersk Line reported, “with deep sadness,” in a statement that the human remains of three of the four crewmen missing during the “Maersk Honam” fire were found on board the ship without being identified yet.
From the shipping company, considering the time elapsed and the severe damage caused by the fire to the ship, they indicated that “we must conclude that we have lost the four missing colleagues since the fire on board the ‘Maersk Honam’, which began on March 6. The four families of our deceased colleagues have been informed. ”
COO of Maerk Line Søren Toft expressed the “most sincere condolences to the families of our deceased colleagues. We share their pain and do everything possible to support them in this devastating moment ”
From the shipping company they indicated that the exhaustive search continues aboard the “Maersk Honam”. However, the active search and rescue mission at sea will stop.
It should be noted that the search and rescue operation began immediately after “Maersk Honam” sent a distress signal on March 6, while sailing through the Arabian Sea “due to a serious fire on board. The call was made by several container ships that diverted their route to help in the search and rescue operation.
On land, the medical conditions of the evacuated crew members progress positively. The 22 have received medical treatment and most have been discharged from hospitals. The crew members who initially received intensive care have been transferred to a general ward and are recovering well. In addition, a psychologist has made available to the entire crew.
“Our colleagues who were evacuated to local hospitals in different health conditions are improving and now we are preparing to take them to their families as their condition allows,” said Palle Laursen, technical director of Maersk Line.
On the other hand, the Indian Maritime Police is conducting a routine investigation of the incident, and they have determined to interview all the members of the crew.
Fight against the sinister
The shipping company also reported that the firefighting efforts on board the “Maersk Honam” are progressing and are in charge of specialized vessels, being headed by Smit Salvage and Ardent, two of the best companies in marine salvage operations.
Maersk Line indicated that it is cooperating in this operation and that it has arranged two Marine Engineers on the site to work closely with Smit and Ardent.
Finally, Maersk Line said it will carry out a full investigation to determine the cause of the fire and the impact on the ship and cargo.
