The City police have commenced an inquiry into death of a 37-year-old Chinese national, whose was brought dead to the Vizhinjam coast a few days ago.
Yushiyang had been on board a bulk carrier Vivian Ocean, which bore a Panamanian flag.
The Coast Guard deployed a ship with a medical team after receiving a medical evacuation request from the cargo vessel which was sailing 29 nautical miles off the Vizhinjam coast on January 25.
J.K. Dinil, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Fort, said the sailor had been brought dead to the coast, following which the body was shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
The post-mortem examination was done by a team led by police surgeons, Sasikala and Thankamma of the Department of Forensic Medicine, on Saturday, following which the body was embalmed and shifted to morgue.
Crew to be questioned
Mr. Dinil said that forensic, fingerprint and scientific experts conducted a inspected the vessel for two days to collect evidence. Twenty-men members of the crew, including the captain of the ship, will be questioned on Monday.
While there are claims that the man had fallen off the vessel, the police are yet to arrive at a conclusion. A case has been registered at the Vizhinjam Coastal Police station.
The police have contacted the Chinese embassy. The cargo vessel, berthed at Vizhinjam, will be let off only after the completion of an exhaustive process since the case involved the death of a foreign national from a foreign ship.
