An explosion in the engine room of Geo’s drilling ship seems to be the cause of the fire.
On Tuesday, April 17, 2018, the Geo’s drilling ship burst into flames following an explosion in its engine room. The ship was located south of the China Sea, specifically in Kuaka Baran waters.
The ship, owned by Ageo Marine (Kuala Lumpur) was being operated by Petronas.
On board, there were a total of 38 crew members, of whom only 1 remained unaccounted for and two were injured. All of Malay nationality except six (five Indonesians and one Thai). The Malaysian Maritime Safety Agency (MMEA) reported that the lifeless body of the missing crew member had been found inside the vessel.
The Penggalang 23 and KM Siakap vessels equipped with firefighting systems were deployed in the area. Also in the area were the ships Hisyam 8 and Neopetro 18.
