A Maritime Accident That Divided Uruguay In 1960

It was the case of the Calpean Star, sunk near the channel.

It was May 18, 1960, we were 36 years old then. The former Chieftain Highland entered port with damage to the rudder and adverse weather conditions could only enter on the 23rd. It had been acquired years ago by the Argentina Fishing Company in 250 thousand pounds: a famous English ship of 14,232 gross tons, Length 171.50 meters, built in England in 1928, which throughout his life transported thousands of Spanish immigrants to the Río de la Plata, although the Spaniards were for Montevideo.

His last trip as Mala Real was in November 1958 and then it was sold. He was going to England to be converted into a mother refrigerator ship. The Uruguayan divers will go down to study what has the rudder and if it can be fixed. A year and a half later, the ship was lost.

Now it was called “Calpean Star”. It was a heavy, disputed maritime history that took place on the port of Montevideo and there it is sunken.

The rudder.

Well, following the old formula of the Cias. Insurance that the shipowner must make in the event of an accident maximum efforts to save his ship, the owner of the “Calpean Star” while in Montevideo hired divers to study the nature of the damage and apparently nothing could be done here but the rudder was not insurance on such a long trip and it was decided to repair it in England for which a powerful tugboat was hired that in 48 hours was positioned in waters outside of Uruguay and on June 1, 1960, it took Practical to leave.

We are remembering an event that occurred 58 years ago, so we are synthesizing. The pilot took the boat through the canal and suddenly noticed that he was losing buoyancy or was making water in the machines. Then, with intelligence and wisdom, he made the decision to remove it as soon as possible from the access channel to the port and to turn it to his right, that is to starboard, a few meters. It is sunken perpendicular to the channel. It is an area that receives mud and of course, slows down the current and then the mud is slid part towards the channel and leaves towards the opposite side.

More than a year ago, the ANP tried to refloat it without success and finally abandoned it where it is now submerged – on the side of the entrance channel to the port – in the mud at a depth of more than 10 meters. In the past, when there was a downspout, they could see their sticks.

Anecdote.

We were on board several times even when the ship was almost, almost sunk, which seen now, 58 years later, it seems crazy because well in one of these first excursions we discovered his valuable piano whose legs were already with 10 centimetres of water and we assumed that this beautiful and luxurious piano had been lost forever. Well, it was not like that because we went 15 days later, the boat had sunk one more foot in the water and we discovered that the piano was not there. Saving it as the ship was flooded must have been a great and extremely risky operation but the piano was saved. We would like someone to whisper in our ears not who did it but as they did because that was an impossible mission.
