Two seamen missing after fishing ship El Fairell sank in collision with tanker Midvolga-2 off Barcelona

Midvolga-2Two people are missing after Spanish fishing vessel El Fairell sank in collision with Russian product tanker Midvolga-2 on 2 nautical miles southeast off Barcelona, Spain. Following the collision the fishing trawler capsized and all the four crew went into the water. The tanker crew succeeded to rescue two from the troubled fishermen, but another two went missing. The accident was reported to the local authorities and at the scene of the capsized Spanish fishing vessel were deployed Salvamento Mairitimo rescue boats, helicopters and ROV. The tanker resumed voyage to Alexandria, but was ordered to return Spain for further investigation. Currently the Russian product tanker Midvolga-2 is berthed in Barcelona and the local authorities will assess the responsibilities of the vessel into the collision.

The Russian product tanker Midvolga-2 did not suffered any damages or breached during the collision. None of the crew was injured. The accident happened just a while after vessel left Barcelona en route to Egypt. Additional details regarding collision were not revealed and currently are under investigation for the local authorities.

The product tanker Midvolga-2 (IMO: 9735139) has overall length of 140.00 m, moulded beam of 16.00 m and maximum draft of 4.50 m. The deadweight of the ship is 6,573 DWT and the gross tonnage is 4,979 GRT. The product tanker was built in 2014 by Haichuan Shipyard in Yangzhou, China and operated under the flag of Russia.
