Container carrier CMA CGM Centaurus collided with dock 2 at DP World’s terminal hub in Port of Jebel Ali, causing a collapse of the giant shore STS crane, reported UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch. The accident occurred on Thursday (May 4th), but fortunately there were no reported casualties. Six people were slightly injured and hospitalized, but their situation is stable. The container carrier proceeded at the dock, but her forepeak hit the legs of the shore crane, which caused its collapse over several trucks and building. The root cause of the accident is yet unknown and under investigation, but container ship also suffered damages during the collision. None of the seafarers on board of CMA CGM Centaurus was injured.
“While berthing, a CMA CGM container ship collided with harbor wall, striking the leg of a quay STS crane. The crane collapsed, but fortunately there were no seriously injured people”, said the officials statement of DP World.
Second crane was also involved into the accident and left the railway, but fortunately remained stable and did not collapsed over the pier.
The container carrier CMA CGM Centaurus (IMO: 9410777) has overall length of 364.00 m, moulded beam of 46.00 m and maximum draft of 15.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 128,550 DWT and ther gross tonnage is 131,332 GRT. The ship has capacity to carry 11,356 TEU. The container carrier CMA CGM Centaurus was built in 2011 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.
