Kazakhstan opened a new ferry route for trade with Azerbaijan through the port of Kuryk. The first cargo from the port were already shipped by Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company and successfully arrived in Baku, which opens new age for the trade between the two countries. The launch of the Kuryk port operation is an important event for Azerbaijan, as the new complex located closer to port of Baku, than regularly used port of Aktau. The transit time between the two ports is less than 18 hours, which ensure faster regular service and increase of the trade relations between the two countries.
“The freight of railroad cars were sent by ferry Barda, owned by ZAO, from the port of Kuryk on March 24 and the next day they arrived at the Baku International Sea Trade Port in Alyata. The leadership of the port Kuryk closely watched the mooring of the ferry Barda and the process of loading the cars, which were successful”, said the official statement of the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company. “The new port complex is located closer to the Baku port than Aktau. So, the way from Kuryk to Baku takes 18 hours, while from Aktau the transit time is 22 hours. The construction of the port of Kuryk was based on the experience of Azerbaijani seamen and the Baku International Sea Trade Port”, adds the statement.
The port of Kuryk, which has total area of 40 hectares, is located on the line of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TMTM), which is of great importance for handling the growing volume of cargo in this direction. The construction of a ferry complex in the port of Kuryk began in April 2015. The opening of the ferry complex took place on December 6, 2016. The designed capacity of the complex is 5.1 million tons of cargo per year and the cost of the project is 101 million USD.
