The general cargo ship Onego Merchant allided with lock in Port of Emden, German media reported. The vessel was maneuvering to depart the port and proceed to river Ems, when the accommodation block contacted a deflector rail of the lock. The general cargo ship suffered only slight damages, but was not breached and was able to continue the voyage to Hawkesbury. On other hand, the lock was damaged and ports dropped into the water, which caused closing it for shipping until further checks and repairs are completed. The masonry and the light signal system were broken, but also there are doubts for structure damages to the lock itself. The divers will make an inspection before open the construction for shipping again.
The local authorities initiated investigation for the root cause of the accident. Fortunately during the collision there were no injured people and no water pollution.
