General cargo ship Caledonia ran aground in Constanta port

CaledoniaThe general cargo ship Caledonia ran aground in Constanta port, Romania. The vessel was maneuvering to leave the port, but suffered technical failure and left the fairway, stucking into the sand bank. The vessel was hardly aground at the shallow and the crew reported the accident to the local authorities. At the scene of the troubled cargo vessel were sent divers and salvage tug. It was estimated that there were no serious underwater damages during the accident and the general cargo ship Caledonia was refloated and towed back to the berth. The vessel was detained for further inspection and special survey before released to resume voyage to Veracruz, Mexico.

During the accident there were no injured people and no reported water pollution. The investigation for the root cause of the grounding is under way. According to preliminary information, the accident happened due to technical failure.

The general cargo ship Caledonia (IMO: 9262546) has overall length of 188.30 m, moulded beam of 27.60 m and maximum draft of 11.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 35,079 DWT and the gross tonnage is 24,918 GRT. The freighter was built in 2002 by Yuehai Shipbuilding in their shipyard in Jiangdu, China.
