The general cargo ship Ali Aga capsized and sank at Port of Celebi Bandırma in Turkey, local media reported. The vessel was docked at the terminal to take empty containers, but started developing list to starboard due to incorrect loading. The Master ordered all the crew to abandon the vessel, but freighter capsized in a few minutes, causing injuries to 12 people – crew and dock workers. Fortunately there were no reported casualties during the sinking of the freighter and only two of the injured people were hospitalized with minor hurts. The accident was reported to local authorities and around the capsized ship Ali Aga were laid oil booms to prevent any oil leak and water pollution.
The local authorities initiated investigation for the root cause of the accident. The authorities will consider refloating of the vessel and wreck removal from the terminal. The hazmat teams are monitoring the area around capsized vessel.
The general cargo ship Ali Aga (IMO: 8121719) has overall length of 77.00 m, moulded beam of 13.00 m and maximum draft of 4.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 3,126 DWT and the gross tonnage is 1,998 GRT. The fregither was built in 1983 by Astilleros Zamakona Pasaia in their shipyard in Pasajes, Spain. According to local media, the vessel is owned by Turkish Ayden Shipping Company.
