The vessel arrived from Barcelona and was maneuvering to berth, but the strong winds pushed her to the quay, which cause collision and breaching of the aft starboard hull. The hole is above the water line and there is no water ingress or danger for the seaworthiness of the ferry, but ship Sicilia was taken out of service for repairs and special survey. The accident was reported to the local authorities, which dispatched additional tug to assist with docking and offloading of the cars and people from the troubled vessel. The ferry Sicilia was docking at port of Ibiza with assistance of two tugs, but the bad weather and strong wind gusts pushed the vessel over the pier and caused the collision.

During the collision there were no injured people and no reported oil leak. The local authorities started investigation for the circumstances around the accident and if navigation officers followed the port procedures for docking.

The ferry Sicilia (IMO: 9261542) has overall length of 187.00 m, moulded beam of 26.00 m and maximum draft of 6.20 m. The deadweight of the ship is 7,000 DWT and the gross tonnage is 24,409 GRT. The ferry Sicilia was built in 2002 by Cantieri Navali Visentini in their shipyard in Porto Viro, Italy.
