Ferry Pinar Del Rio allided with pier in Malaga, Spain

Pinar Del Rio allided with pierFerry Pinar Del Rio allided with pier near the Levante dock in Malaga, Spain. The vessel with 143 passengers was pushed by strong winds during maneuvering for docking and stuck with the pier near the cruise station. During the collision there were damages to the trimaran’s hull in the forepart, but ship remained afloat and there were no reported injuries among the people on board. The local authorities initiated investigation for the root cause of the accident, estimating if the ferry Pinar Del Rio suffered technical problem or it was human mistake. The crew succeeded to dock the vessel and all the people and vehicles were disembarked to the pier without reported injuries.

During the collision two people fell (or jumped) overboard and were rescued by the local authorities. It was estimated that they were refugees. Later on board were found another five illegal migrant, who were arrested by the National Police.

The ferry was operating on regular route between Mellila and Malaga. The company operator, Balearia, sent another ship to replace Pinar Del Rio on the loop until further inspection and investigation.

The ferry Pinar Del Rio (IMO: 9043952) has overall length of 73.00 m, moulded beam of 25.00 m and maximum draft of 3.40 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 197 DWT and the gross tonnage is 3,454 GRT.
