The Icelandic container operator Eimskip acquired 80% share in Belgian logistics company Mareco N.V., which is specialized in refrigerated transport. The dead worth 16.6 million EUR and will improve the positions of the container carrier in transportation of refrigerated cargo in the western, central and southern Africa. The annual turnover of Mareco N.V. amounted to 60 million EUR, while the volume traffic is about 32,000 TEU. According to Eimskip, the deal will expand the geography of operations and will strengthen the company’s position in Africa and South America.
Eimskip recently aggressively invest in business development. In October last year, the company acquired 90% of the Dutch logistics company Extraco Internationale Expeditie B.V., which provides services for the transport of refrigerated goods. In November, Simskip acquired the Norwegian shipping and logistics company Nor Lines. The company said it plans further acquisitions and investments in the development of the fleet in order to increase its market share.
In a separate statement this week, Eimskip announced placing an order for building of two new ice-class container ships with a capacity of 2,150 TEU in China and cooperation agreement with Royal Arctic Line (Greenland), which ordered another vessel with same size. Eimskip said that the details of the partnership agreement will be published later. The company also noted that the order for a new trial is a “step” in a focused effort to modernize and increase its fleet.
