Cargo ship Mechanik Fomin developed heavy list after cargo shift in Norwegian Sea

Mechanik Fomin listThe general cargo ship Mechanik Fomin developed heavy list to portboard in Norwegian Sea west off Narvik after cargo shift. The vessel was en route to Inverness in UK with cargo of timber, when some of the deck cargo fell overboard, which caused heavy list and danger for the seaworthiness. The crew reported the accident to the local authorities and coast guard rescue boats responded to the troubled freighter. Meanwhile, the cargo ship Mechanik Fomin changed course to towards Norwegian coast, heading for Sortland. The coast guard rescue boats escorted the freighter in case of worsening of situation, being ready to evacuated the 13 crew. Fortunately the general cargo ship Mechanik Fomin arrived successfully in Sortland, where the situation was taken under control and the vessel was stabilized.

During the accident there were no injured people and no reported water pollution. The investigation for the root cause of the accident is under way.

As some part of the cargo from the freighter fell overboard in Norwegian Sea west off Narvik, the local authorities sent notice to mariners to be cautious when navigating through the area.

The general cargo ship Mechanik Fomin (IMO: 8904381) has overall length of 85.00 m, moulded beam of 14.00 m and maximum draft of 5.30 m. The deadweight of the freighter is 2,650 DWT and the gross tonnage is 2,489 GRT. The ship was built in 1991 and operate under the flag of Russia.
