Bulk carrier Nordic Barents collided with nuclear icebreaker Vaygach in Kara sea

Nordic BarentsThe bulk carrier Nordic Barents collided with the nuclear icebreaker Vaygach in Kara sea off Russia. The cargo vessel was under escort with the icebreaker ahead through the ice, when the freighter hit the stern of the front ship. The bulk carrier’s bow struck icebreaker’s wooden fender. The cargo ship Nordic Barents suffered slight damage to its bow and several dents, but without breaches and reported water ingress. The nuclear icebreaker Vaygach was not damaged. The convoy stopped for a while to ensure that collision did not caused any damages to both vessel and shortly after that proceeded the voyages, keeping navigating through ice with final port of destination in Murmansk.

Fortunately during the accident there were no injured people and no reported pollution. The bulk carrier Nordic Barents was en route from from Port Dickson in Kara sea to Murmansk.

The bulk carrier Nordic Barents (IMO: 9079169) has overall length of 190.00 m, moulded beam of 31.00 m and maximum draft of 11.40 m. The deadweight of the ship is 43,732 DWT and the gross tonnage is 27,078 GRT. The freighter was built in 1995 by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering in South Korea.

The nuclear icebreaker Vaygach (IMO: 8417493) has overall length of 150.00 m, moulded beam of 29.00 m and maximum draft of 8.70 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 3,581 DWT and the gross tonnage is 20,791 GRT. The icebreaker was built in 1990 by STX Finland shipyard.
