The general cargo ship Granit lost propulsion power and remained adrift in Sea of Japan near Hokkaido Island. The ship suffered failure of the main engine, while en route from Petropavlovsk to Kozmino with 1040 tons of general cargo and empty containers. The general cargo vessel remain adrift at moderate weather with east winds of 12-15 m/s and 1.5-meter waves. There is no immediate danger for the seaworthiness of the vessel, but Master reported that engineers cannot repair the engine and requested assistance. At the scene of the troubled freighter was dispatched salvage tug Neftegaz-55, which started towing of the ship to port of Vladivostok. Currently the convoy is en route to Russia with speed of 5.7 knots.
The general cargo ship will be repaired at the port of Vladivostok and then inspected, before return in service. During the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution. On board of the troubled freighter there were 304 tons of heavy oil, 3.6 tons of diesel oil and 19 tons of fresh water, but there was no report for spill.
The general cargo ship Granit (IMO: 9342554) has overall length of 81.00 m, moulded beam of 13.60 m and maximum draft of 5.00 m. The deadweight of the ship is 3,417 DWT and the gross tonnage is 1,958 GRT. The freighter was built in 2005 by Xixiakou Shipbuilding in Rongcheng, China. The owner and operator of the general cargo ship Granit is Russian company Kvinta.
