The general cargo ship Sider Capri collided with car carrier Grande Anversa in southern entrance of Dardanelles Strait. The both vessels were proceeding in opposite directions, but general cargo ship maneuvered and laid of collision course against the car carrier. The both duty officers failed to maneuver accordingly to avoid collision, but fortunately the accident caused slight damages for the both vessels, which remained afloat without reported water ingress. The accident was reported to local authorities and at the scene were dispatched tug, which brought both vessels to Kumkale anchorage in southern Dardanelles, where will be inspected and surveyed.
The investigation for the root cause of the accident is under way. According to preliminary information, the collision happened due to violation of the ColReg rules and lack of communication. The both duty officers neglected the situation of crossing routes and maneuvered too late to avoid it. Fortunately during the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution.
The general cargo ship Sider Capri (IMO: 9143403) has overall length of 100.00 m, moulded beam of 17.00 m and maximum draft of 6.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 4,834 DWT and the gross tonnage is 3,415 GRT. The vessel was built in 1997 by Kroger Werft in Rendsburg, Germany. During the accident, the ship was en route from Constanta, Romania to Larnaca, Cyprus.
The car carrier Grande Anversa (IMO: 9287417) has overall length of 176.00 m, moulded beam of 31.00 m and maximum draft of 8.30 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 12,420 DWT and the gross tonnage is 38,651 GRT. The car carrier was built in 2004 by Uljanik Shipyard in Pula, Croatia. The ship is owned and operated by Italian company Grimaldi Group. During the accident, the car carrier Grande Anversa was en route from Valencia, Spain to Autoport Izmit, Turkey.
