Container ships collided at Port of Mersin, Turkey

Corona J shipThe container ship Corona J collided with berthed vessel Taurus at Port of Mersin, Turkey. The accident happened during maneuvering for docking at Turkish container terminal. The collision happened in moderate sea with pilot on board, probably due to navigation mistake. The container ship Corona J hit the berthed Taurus with slow speed and both remained afloat, suffering slight damages of the hulls, broken railings, dents and skews. The accident was classified as minor, but container carriers were detained until repair of the damages and will return in operations with slight delay.

The local authorities detained the carriers for inspection of seaworthiness and will follow investigation for the root cause of the collision. Fortunately during the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution.

The deadweight of the carrier is 16,794 DWT and the gross tonnage is 16,129 GRT. The vessel was built in 2002 at Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipyard in China. The owner and manager of the ship Corona J is German company Jungerhaus Reederei.
