Hong Yuan 02 aground reefThe container ship Hong Yuan 02 stuck on reef in East China Sea west off Small Huanglong Island, China. The vessel was en route from Jingtang to Humen, carrying 864 TEU and 68 FEU, but was adrifted to rocky shallow by bad weather and strong winds. After grounding, the container carrier was breached in the bow area with ensuing water ingress. The vessel developed fore tilt and starboard list, risking from cargo shift and containers felling overboard. The accident was reported to the local authorities and at the scene were dispatched barges to offload some of the containers. The water ingress was taken under control, but salvage will be started after patching the holes and ensure stability of the container carrier.

During the grounding there were no injured people and no reported water pollution. The root cause and circumstances around grounding are under investigation. The traffic at the area was not affected.

The container ship Hong Yuan 02 (IMO: 9137703) has overall length of 188.00 m, moulded beam of 30.00 m and maximum draft of 8.10 m. The deadweight of the ship is 30,637 DWT and the gross tonnage is 23,734 GRT. The vessel was built in 1997 in Gdynia Shipyard in Poland. The vessel is operated by the Chinese shipping company Hongyuan Marine.
